First cataract surgeries

Updated: Jun 6, 2023

Last month we reported on the inauguration of the Sumati Phadnis Eye Surgery Department at our Caring Friends Hospital. One of the reasons for establishing this service was to address the stigma people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) experience, particularly when it comes to surgeries. So many doctors still refuse to treat PLHA hence this new service.

We are pleased to tell you that we have since completed three successful eye surgeries. One of our first patients had a congenital cataract and operating on this can be highly challenging with a high rate of failure. In this case the operation was a complete success. Another surgery was also critical with the lens adhering to the posterior wall and there were high chances of the wall getting ruptured during the procedure. Again the surgery was a great success with the lens safely removed.

These surgeries are greatly improving the lives of our patients and there are more scheduled in the coming months. If you or someone you know requires eye treatment please contact our hospital, cfhrc@snehalaya.org.
