Rising Beyond Limitations

This is a story that began nearly 20 years ago—a story of resilience, care, and quiet courage. It is the journey of an orphaned girl, whom we will call Palak, whose life found a new direction with the support of Snehalaya.

Palak came to Snehalaya at a very young age, during the early years of the institution’s development. As part of routine medical examinations, doctors discovered that she was HIV-positive. Under proper medical guidance, she was immediately started on ART medication, ensuring timely care and long-term health support.

A Challenging Childhood

From early childhood, Palak was energetic and mischievous. She found it difficult to accept instructions and often reacted strongly when teased. As she grew older, her voice remained unusually childlike, which sometimes became a reason for ridicule and anger. School never appealed to her—she preferred playing and spending time like other children rather than sitting in classrooms.

Her lack of interest in school led to frequent absences. At times, she would get ready for school but quietly avoid boarding the school bus. Despite these struggles, with persistent support, she managed to complete her education up to the 9th standard at a reputed school in Ahilyanagar. Caregivers, however, remained deeply concerned about her future.

Discovering Strengths Beyond Classrooms

Palak had a natural affection for young children and was particularly sensitive to their well-being. She also showed a strong inclination towards cleanliness and order. Recognising these strengths, Snehalaya entrusted her with responsibilities involving childcare and basic housekeeping—roles she performed with dedication and joy.

As Palak had no known family background, turning 18 brought uncertainty about her rehabilitation. She was introduced to Snehalaya’s Snehadhar Project, a transitional rehabilitation programme.

Learning to Belong

The initial months at Snehadhar were difficult. Palak struggled to settle, often staying wherever space was available. With consistent counselling and emotional support, she slowly began living as a residential participant. She preferred limited social interaction and bonded closely with only one peer. Her interest in cleanliness naturally led her to assist in kitchen and housekeeping tasks.

Since formal education had always been a challenge, alternative skill-based pathways were explored.

Choosing Skills, Choosing Independence

After about two and a half years, Palak was sent to Pune to complete a professional housekeeping course. She successfully completed the three-month training and soon found employment at a small workplace in Pune.

However, when educational qualifications became a requirement, she lost her job. This moment became a turning point. For the first time, Palak truly understood the importance of education.

Determined to try again, she returned to Snehadhar in Ahilyanagar, enrolled through the open schooling system, and completed her 10th standard while studying at Dadasaheb Rupwate College. This time, she took her education seriously—and she continues to remain connected to learning even today.

Finding Her Voice

Inspired by other young women from the project who were working independently, Palak once again pursued skill training and completed another housekeeping course with Pratham Foundation in Kamargaon.

At the programme’s farewell ceremony, something remarkable happened. A young woman who once avoided speaking due to her voice and insecurities stood confidently before 200 people and delivered a speech. In that moment, Palak truly claimed her confidence and self-worth.

Standing on Her Own Today

Following this, Palak worked in several reputed hotels in Ahilyanagar. Today, she is employed as a housekeeper at a well-known hotel, performing her responsibilities with honesty and dedication.

Her dream now is simple yet powerful—to work in a reputed hotel or café in Pune, to grow professionally based on her experience, and to build an independent life in the city.

A Journey of Quiet Courage

Palak’s journey is not just about employment or education. It is about discovering dignity, confidence, and the courage to dream—despite health challenges, social stigma, and early life uncertainties.

Her story reminds us that with consistent care, patience, and belief, every individual has the potential to rise—beyond limitations, beyond labels, and towards a life of self-reliance.
