Whilst we are not a professional volunteering organisation, with a fixed program of volunteering, we do welcome those who wish to understand more about the workings of an Indian NGO and the social issues affecting Indian society. We have hosted hundreds of people, young and old, over the years and strive to provide an immersive experience that many find life-changing. From seasoned professionals to freshers, we tailor each placement to the individual volunteer’s experience and interests and each experiences is uniquely different. Here one of our recent volunteers, Kyle from Canada shares his insights for those considering visiting our projects in Ahmednagar.
“After arriving at Snehalaya you immediately know you are somewhere special. The kids, residents and staff are all so welcoming and kind. Seeing people from all walks of life live as one big family shows how good of a job they have done here. I have seen countless acts of kindness from one kid to another and it never fails to warm my heart.
“Snehalaya is a large, very structured organisation with many programs. If you plan to volunteer here I'd recommend thinking about which program you think you'd have the largest impact in. The size of Snehalaya can be very daunting at first with over 20 programs and many residents. You may feel overwhelmed when arriving as I did but quickly you will find a spot for yourself and feel like part of the family. I spent 10 weeks working with the kids, including in the school. The kids are always looking for something to do and many enjoy learning. I think helping them foster that desire to learn is such a valuable thing for them as they don’t always get individual attention. There is only a limited amount of caregivers and while they do an amazing job, the children always love the extra games, activities and events that volunteers bring. Spending Christmas with the kids was such an amazing day that I will never forget.
“After seeing a few of the projects, I started to get a grasp of how large of an impact this organisation is making. I've never been more inspired than when I first met Girish and heard his story. He shows how one person can really make a difference and seeing his charisma and drive to continue making the community better is so admirable.
“This was an experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life and I can't wait to return. I haven't even left yet and I am already planning my trip back.”
