AN ESTIMATED 10 MILLION  WOMEN AND CHILDREN ARE INVOLVED IN PROSTITUTION IN INDIA.

THEY REQUIRE RESCUE | REHABILITATION | HEALTHCARE | EDUCATION | ADVOCACY

EMPOWERING WOMEN

Snehalaya means 'Home of Love', and has been working with exploited women since 1989, when our founder, Dr Girish Kulkarni entered our local red-light area to see how he could help the female sex workers. Since then, Snehalaya has grown to provide support to vulnerable women, children and LGBT communities, who have been affected by HIV and AIDS, trafficking, sexual violence and poverty, still with the primary focus on empowering women to prevent the exploitation that forces them to enter prostitution. We operate in Ahmednagar, a town and district in the rural region of Maharashtra, India, and provide services to over 15,000 beneficiaries annually.

We are more than an NGO, we are a strong and passionate family, united in the belief that no one should stand alone.  Many of our staff first came to us as beneficiaries and want to help others like them.  We understand that resilience - the desire to survive - is an extraordinary force.  A sense of belonging and compassion can nurture even the most destitute and fragile people to not just survive but to thrive in life. We welcome everyone with an open heart and without prejudice.

our projects

The first free telephone helpline in India for women is now open to all women and our short and long-stay safe houses provide legal aid, refuge, and alternatives to those experiencing harassment, discrimination, and domestic violence.

By providing career alternatives, essential documentation such as Adhar cards, legal support, and information on their human rights and providing them alternatives while they are still young enough to re-train we are giving them an opportunity for sustainable livelihoods and futures with dignity.

Snehalaya's regional clinics and health camps distribute condoms and conduct sexual health education and STD testing without judgment. We rely on a network of peer mentors, recruited from our local sex workers and MSM communities, who play a key role in our outreach health work and education projects.

Snehalaya has been working within the area to build the trust of this vulnerable and closed community. We have over 400 beneficiaries currently registered with us accessing free condoms, sexual health clinics and testing, and other support services while also working with us to prevent underage prostitution.

Snehalaya runs the only hospital specializing in the care of patients affected by HIV in India, and we offer treatment and dignity to those that others turn away. Our 50-bed hospital, which opened in May 2017, is set to improve the lives of thousands more. A new surgical unit means we can provide life-saving surgery to those who face discrimination and refusal of treatment based on their HIV status in our local hospitals.
